When you have an insurance claim on your roof, it is important that you understand a few basic things:

1. The law says you have a right to pick your contractor. The insurance carrier cannot tell you to “get 3 bids” because no matter what the cost, the carrier pays it. All you are responsible to pay is the deductible portion of the repairs.

2. Know if there are any exclusions in your policy that would allow the carrier to deny coverage of anything on your property.

3. You have 1 YEAR to make a claim after a covered event occurs.

4. Upgrades to your shingles are NOT expensive. If you get a bid for $2000-3000 for Class 4 Impact shingles, you are likely being overcharged.

5. Your contractor should be acting as the construction arm of the claim, doing all of the work detailed in the claim, and only charging what the claim says they can charge. Your ONLY cost should be your deductible.
